1950's U of A "pom girl" heads to Sweet 16

TUCSON-Fans are already cheering on the Wildcats facing Ohio State this Thursday in Los Angeles.

1,250 tickets were allotted to the U of A.

Those were offered to alumni and students, and there was room for a lucky few to book their spot on the team's charter plane.

Virgie and Wright Cortner will be rubbing elbows with the players on that trip.

Virgie said she's been passionate about U of A basketball since the 50's when she was on the pom line.

She dedicates a room in her home to U of A memorabilia that she's collected since then.

When she and Wright Cortner got together, it was only natural that he become a fan, too.

"'Now Virginia, what's the most important thing for you in this marriage?' and instead of saying, ‘well I hope my husband's not a womanizer or a drunk,' she said ‘good basketball tickets!'" said Cortner.

They've been to more basketball games than they can count.

Every time with a doll they call "Good Luck Dolly" at their side.

They're getting ready to join the team Tuesday on the charter team.

"We love it. I mean it is so much fun to go on the charter with the boys and watch them. Just to see them and see their faces," said Virgie.

Bon Voyage Travel tells News 4 Tucson the Cortners are a lucky pair since there was only room for about 20 people.

"Because it's the U of A official party and the team, they only had a limited number of extra seats available," said Katie Clark with Bon Voyage Travel.

Virgie's warming up to receive the team with a big cheer, and packing her game day shirt.

Now she's ready for the trip.

They're hoping "Good Luck Dolly" helps them get to Final Four.
