2 of 3 bills targeting public unions advance

PHOENIX (AP) - One of three bills targeting public employee unions failed to make it out of a House committee after opposition from police and fire unions whose supporters packed the room led two key Republicans to oppose its passage.

But one other bill that also failed was revived after a failed Democratic maneuver to kill it permanently.

Rep. Michelle Ugenti's bill forcing each city or town to take a public vote on collecting union dues through paycheck deductions passed even though two fellow Republicans expressed deep concern about its reach.

A bill requiring employee union negotiations be done in public failed, but then was passed to the full House after Democratic Rep. Martin Quezada tried to have it killed outright. Another bill banning public employees from doing some union work was pulled.
