NOGALES - A 35-year-old Tucson man was arrested Tuesday for attempting to smuggle more than two pounds of heroin into the U.S. through the Morley Pedestrian Gate, Customs and Border Protection said.
Border agents directed Calvin C. Howard III to a secondary questioning area after detecting possible drugs around his waist, the release stated.
Howard then attempted to flee back into Mexico and became combative when officers tried to take him into custody.
Once they had him secured, officers removed two packages of heroin from around his waist and one smaller package from his navel. The drugs, worth nearly $30,000, were seized and Howard was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
