COCHISE COUNTY - On Monday August 2, 2010, Animal Control Officers responded to the corner of Lake Shelly and Little Rincon and found a red and black brindle puppy.
The Animal Control Officer attempted to make contact with the owner. While at the residence, the Animal Control Officer observed several other dogs in the yard and there was food and water available for them.
The ACO also observed a young brown and white heeler mix that was crying and scratching at its neck. The ACO attempted to reach the resident without successs. The officer then took the dog from the residence for immediate medical treatment.
The veterinarian found that the collar was imbedded in the dog's neck. The Veterinarian surgically removed the collar.
On Tuesday August 3 the dog was transported to the Benson Shelter, where they were given the medications and care instructions.
The ACO Officer returned a call to the animal's owner and advised him of the circumstances of the dog. The owner advised that he is the owner of the red and black brindle puppy and the brown and white heeler, as well as the pit bull and puppies left at his residence.
The owner said that the brown and white heeler, "Sadie" would not come to him so he was unaware of the imbedded collar. The owner was given the vet bill along with citations for Cruel mistreatment of an Animal, for Sadie, and for Dog at Large, no collar or tags, for the red and black puppy.
Sadie is available for adoption at the end of September, or earlier if someone is willing to ensure follow up care with her injury. Adoption fees for Sadie will be a donation in her name to the veterinarian's office. Sadie is about eight months old and weighs approximately 35 pounds. Sadie is highly energetic and will need frequent exercise and she is good with other dogs. Sadie is current on all of her shots and she needs a good home. Sadie still needs some work on manners and appropriate chewing, but she is very loving and willing to learn.
Anyone seriously interested in adopting Sadie can please contact ACO Evans at 432-9500.
