PIMA COUNTY SHERIFF'S PRESS RELEASE: On April 2, 2014 at approximately 7:45 p.m., Rincon District deputies responded to a vehicle collision at East Speedway Boulevard and Freeman Road. When deputies arrived, they learned an SUV was travelling westbound on Speedway Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The driver began to lose control of the vehicle when it reached Freeman Road. The SUV went left of center and sideswiped an eastbound SUV.
The driver of the westbound SUV was unable to regain control of his vehicle. He sideswiped a second eastbound SUV before leaving the roadway and colliding with a telephone pole.
The driver of the westbound SUV, identified as 60-year-old Michael Hatch, was transported to the trauma center where he was pronounced deceased.
The occupants in the second SUV were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injures.
The occupants in the first SUV were not injured.
Alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.
