Tucson - Late Friday, Pima County Sheriffs Department announced Alejandro Guerena was taken into custody.
Guerena was wanted in connection with an investigation into the Guerena Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO) which was suspected of being involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. He was considered to be the leader of that organization, according to a Pima County Sheriff Department press release.
Alejandro Guerena was the brother of Jose Guerena, who was killed by a Pima County SWAT team in May 2011 while a search warrant was being served.
According to Pima County Sheriff Spokesperson Tom Peine, Guerena was captured by Mexican authorities and turned over to the US Marshals Service and subsequently the Sheriff Department's Fugitive Investigative Strike Team.
Guerena was booked into Pima County Jail on a felony warrant for one count of Conspiracy to Commit Possession of Marijuana For Sale, one count of Illegally Conducting a Criminal Enterprise, one count of Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering, one count of Fraudulent Schemes and Artificies and 21 counts of Money Laundering in the 2nd Degree.
Pima County lists Alejandro Ortiz Guerena as one of their most wanted criminal suspects.
The initial investigation by the Sheriff's Special Investigations Unit dates back to 2009, when detectives became aware of the Guerena DTO and began investigative efforts. In May 2011, several search warrants were obtained and served at several different residences controlled by the Guerena DTO.
