WILLCOX - In Arizona, one in every eight babies is born premature. It's the leading cause of infant death.
The March of Dimes is on a mission to prevent birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. The Organization is celebrating its 75th Anniversary.
A Willcox family lost a child not long ago and it is possible your family made a visit to their farm.
"Zane was my son. He was born three months premature--back six years ago--August of 2007."
Zane's family was able to spend 2 weeks with him, in the NICU, before he passed.
The March of Dimes gave support and information.
"It became our goal to raise money for this wonderful organization as it had touched us during our time of need," says Zane's mother, Mandy Kirkendall.
Mandy is the Director of Fun/Manager at Apple Annie's Orchard in Willcox.
Every October they throw a Fall Pumpkin Celebration complete with a corn maze.
Kristi's kids got a preview because this year's theme is the March of Dimes' 75th Anniversary.
"It's great fun for the whole family. There's three mazes in one," Mandy explains. "You can choose the intermediate one or the challenge one. And we also have one for field trips when the kids come down for field trips."
A percentage of the proceeds will go to March of Dimes to support innovative research. According to the March of Dimes, their researchers helped develop the sonogram and ultrasound.
Ever wonder how they carve a maze in field of corn? Mandy's father, John Holcomb who owns Apple Annie's, took us through it.
"We plant the corn, north and south, and east and west, so we have a grid out in the field."
That takes about two days. Then they paint the design on the ground when the corn is still young.
"And then we can come back and remove the corn that's within the design. And when the corn grows tall we've got our design."
By the end of October hundreds will find their way through the maze.
The Apple Annie's family hopes you'll leave knowing more about the March of Dimes.
