Ariz Dept of Corrections van rolls near Florence; several inmates injured

FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - An Arizona Department of Corrections van carrying 10 inmates and two staff members has rolled over near Florence and eight of the men have been taken to hospitals.

Authorities say one inmate was flown to a Mesa hospital with serious injuries and seven were taken by ground ambulances with non-life threatening injuries.

They say two correctional officers in the van suffered minor injuries.

State Department of Public Safety officials say the van flipped about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on State Route 79 some 20 miles south of Florence as it was headed to the prison.

The driver swerved to avoid a vehicle blocking the highway and lost control.

A DOC spokesman says the 10 inmates and two staff members are part of the wildland fire crew out of the Florence prison.
