TUCSON - The University of Arizona baseball team was not included in the field of 64 teams for the 2013 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship announced today by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee. The Wildcats run as defending national champions comes to a close with a 34-21 record this season.
Arizona made a late-season charge in the final weeks, winning five of their final six and six of their last 10 contests. Included was a three-game sweep of Southern California at Hi Corbett Field this past weekend to finish 15-15 in the Pac-12 Conference.
The Wildcats omission leaves only four teams from the Pac-12 in the NCAA Tournament. Oregon State, Oregon and UCLA were announced as three of the nation's 16 regional hosts last night, and Arizona State was the only other conference team added to the field today when it was placed in the Cal State Fullerton Regional.
Junior third baseman Brandon Dixon secured the conference's batting title by finishing with a .369 batting average. Dixon will likely be named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team when it is announced this week.
Arizona baseball drew 103,877 fans to its games at Hi Corbett Field this season, surpassing the 100,000 mark for the second-straight year.
