Arizona football coaches learn about 'safe tackling'

TUCSON - Local football coaches participated in a clinic to educate them on safe standards when teaching tackling techniques to reduce the risk of concussions.

According to a recent study by Ohio State University, the number of concussions in high school athletes has more than doubled between 2005 and 2012, making clinics like the one organized by "Heads Up Football" even more important.

Salpointe Catholic High School football coach Dennis Bene was one of the experts touring the nation with the program funded by USA Football and the NFL.

"We're trying to establish a gold standard," Bene told News 4 Tucson.

The clinic focused on concussion awareness and management as well as proper equipment fitting and proper tackling.

"We're just trying to establish standards that are rooted in education to make the game better and safer for the kids," Bene said.
