Arpaio to release report on bungled investigations

PHOENIX (AP) - The sheriff for metropolitan Phoenix is scheduled to release a report Monday from an internal investigation into why hundreds of sex-crime cases were either inadequately investigated or not worked at all during a three-year period ending in 2007.

The investigation was launched in May 2008 after a city that paid Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office for police services discovered at least 32 reported child molestations in which the agency failed to follow through.

Arpaio's office reopened more 400 sex-crimes cases that were reported to the agency but were inadequately investigated or not investigated at all after they were reported.

Arpaio apologized in December 2011 for the bungled cases and has said his office moved to clear up the cases and taken steps to prevent the problem from happening again.
