TUCSON - An art show featuring photographs, a preview of 4th of July festivities and a look at what's playing in theaters. Herb Stratford has it all in this week's Arts & Culture segment.
Downtown at Etherton Gallery, a summer show entitled "Unpacked: The Art Fair at Home" is now on display through August 30. The show features photographs by renowned artists throughout the history of the artform, including images by Danny Lyon, Ansel Adams, Emmet Gowin and many others. It's not too early to start planning for a great Fourth of July weekend. One free, family oriented musical event in Oro Valley is scheduled for Saturday, July 6.
Entitled "Musical Magic for Kids" the event takes place at the Oro Valley Council chambers and features stories, musical instruments and singing. The event starts at 10 a.m. and is free and open to the public.
Another art show of note opens this weekend at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. "Reality is a Good Likeness" is a show of work by mixed media artist Patricia Carr Morgan that examines reality, myth and perception and memory. Her works utilize classic iconography from Hollywood film noir and contemporary digital images to depict the American psyche. The show is up through December 1.
And now here's a look at this week's new movies...
Uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) couldn't be more incompatible. But when they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. 'The Heat' is from Paul Feig, director of "Bridesmaids."
In 'White House Down', Capitol policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation's government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter and the country.
