(NBC News) Most of us don't realize how quickly a holiday dinner can turn to disaster if things aren't running right around the house.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, now is the time to take a few steps to keep that from happening.
Step one is checking on your oven.
"The easiest way to do that is to buy a cake mix from the grocery store and cook it exactly according to the instructions," advises Angie Hicks, founder of "Angie's List".
"If it comes out under cooked or over cooked, you'll find if you're temperature is off which it'll be important to get fixed before you make a turkey," she explains.
Getting a repairman to come out now will be easier and probably cheaper.
While you're at it, check all the other appliances, especially the refrigerator.
Also make sure all the plumbing is working properly.
Now is also the time to find out from those on your guests list whether they have allergies to either pets or foods so you can adjust accordingly.
Finally, check to make sure your TV is working properly so that everyone can enjoy the big game after the big meal.
