PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - The federal government wants to buy two pieces of private ranch land inside the Agua Fria National Monument 40 miles north of Phoenix to add to the protected site.
The two 40-acre parcels are part of the Cross Y Ranch. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management hopes to eventually buy all the ranch except about 100 acres that contain buildings.
Two of the four ranch parcels were previously purchased by the Conservation Fund to protect them from development. The group's 706 acres include the two parcels the BLM hopes to buy once a public comment period closing Friday ends.
The Prescott Daily Courier reports the BLM is using about $250,000 from a special federal fund to make the purchase.
