Border agents seize $146K worth of marijuana in two incidents

NOGALES -Two people have been arrested since Saturday in separate incidents for attempting to smuggle a combined 326 pounds of marijuana through the Port of Nogales.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers referred a 22-year-old Douglas man for further inspection of his Dodge truck when he attempted to cross through the Mariposa Port on Tuesday. After a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the vehicle, officers located 55 packages of marijuana within the diesel fuel tank. More than 224 pounds of marijuana was seized - worth in excess of $100,000.

The earlier seizure took place Saturday when officers arrested a 42-year-old Tucson woman after a CBP canine alerted to marijuana within the floor of a Chevrolet sedan. The compartment contained 22 packages of marijuana weighing more than 102 pounds and valued in excess of $46,000.

Both subjects were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations. The drugs and vehicles were seized.
