PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer says the state will appeal a judge's ruling requiring payment to pay an inflation boost to funding for schools.
The judge's July 11 ruling said schools are entitled to at least $317 million in additional funding for inflation this year, and it set the stage for further proceedings that could bump the total to $2.9 billion over the next five years.
Brewer said Thursday that the ruling would devastate the state's budget and services such as public safety.
The judge's ruling follows one in which the state Supreme Court decided that the Legislature failed to obey a voter mandate for annual inflation adjustments to the state's formula for funding schools.
Lawmakers dramatically reduced the inflation adjustments in reaction to the Great Recession's hit on state revenue.
