TUCSON - A successful local business celebrated its 1-year anniversary on Miracle Mile Saturday.
Kelly McLear and her husband bought the historic Monterey Court in 2010.
"Lots of skeptics," she said, "and most people who came in the early days to see the place while we started construction couldn't really visualize what we had visualized."
It is now called Monterey Court Studio Galleries and Café. The property includes a restaurant with a full bar and 12 retail spaces. All but 2 of them are leased.
Over the past few years crime has decreased in the area, partly because of the police substation on the road. McLear does not have any problems at her business.
"Things are really picking up, so we're happy," she said. "It's a safe place to come."
Investors have put millions of dollars into Miracle Mile. The Ghost Ranch Lodge is now affordable senior housing. Wayward Winds is now a women and children's center for the Gospel Rescue Mission. Tucson Police have a new crime lab.
Tucson City Councilwoman Karin Uhlich has been pushing for the change.
"It takes everybody in a little corner of the community to really lift it up," she said, "and this is a great example of how Tucsonans have done that."
Marlene Jacobo was celebrating Mother's Day just south of Miracle Mile with her family Saturday.
"To me, it's just another simple street," Jacobo said. "I'd describe this neighborhood as a peaceful, really good neighborhood."
