SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Despite reported sightings as distant as Los Angeles and Oregon, authorities say a former California fire battalion chief suspected of fatally stabbing his girlfriend never moved far from home as he eluded capture for more than two weeks.
Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones says Orville "Moe" Fleming was found Friday near the area where he abandoned his official California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection pickup in a Sacramento suburb May 1.
That's the same day investigators found the body of 26-year-old Sarah June Douglas in the south Sacramento home she and Fleming had shared for the past two years.
Investigators had feared that Fleming, who is 55, would escape into a remote area. Fleming was familiar with California's mountains and had keys to state fire facilities throughout the state.
