NOGALES, ARIZONA - A 37-year-old California woman has been arrested for attempting to smuggle more than $123,000 worth of heroin through the Dennis DeConcini Port.
Customs and Border Protection officers selected Maria Veronica Martinez of Fresno for an additional inspection of her Dodge sedan when she attempted to enter the United States on Monday. After a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs, an officer found a single package with approximately eight pounds of methamphetamine wrapped around the woman's midsection.
The drugs and vehicle were then processed for seizure. Martinez was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
Individuals arrested may be charged by complaint, the method by which a person is charged with criminal activity, which raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent unless and until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
