Canyon del Oro academic decathalon team wins state championship

TUCSON- The Canyon del Oro Academic Decathalon Team scored 45,873.9 points out of 60,000 points over the weekend at the Arizona Academic Decathalon Finals in Glendale earning them a top score.

Maria Elena Pakulis earned special honors as the top student in the Scholastic Division, and won a trophy for her perfect score in the interview competition. Her other teammates Rebecca Gosla, Caleb Yetman, and Michael Yuhas helped earn their win over Boulder Creek High School.

Students from different schools match their intellect against one another and are tested in ten categories at the decathalon. Each team is composed of nine students that are broken up into 3 "A" or Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C" or Varsity students.

Forty teams competed in the state finals, and this is the fourth time that Canyon del Oro has won the state championship.

"All nine students worked tremendously hard to earn this championship, and will represent Arizona at the nationals finals in Honolulu in late April," said Coach Chris Yetman.
