TUCSON - Arizona's little league diamonds are full of All-Stars this time of year, with district, state and even regional tournaments underway. We caught up with a local club zoning in on a state championship.
"We've been hitting great, we've been bonding as a team and playing solid defense," said CDO short stop Dante Schindler. "We do everything great pretty much."
Kids have been known to say the darnedest things. But Dante Schindler is spot on. The 10-11 Canyon del Oro Little League team tore through District 5 to qualify for the Arizona State Tournament.
"It was fun," said Schindler. "Getting to compete with other teams around the district and 10-run-ruling some teams was pretty fun."
The competition stiffens at the state tourney, yet CDO has won its three games by 20 combined runs.
"We've seen some ok competition, not some great teams yet," admitted first baseman Mac Kochanski, "but I feel we're going to have a very good game on Sunday against the winner of this game, Arrowhead Little League."
CDO and Arrowhead do battle Sunday night with the victor merely wins away from an Arizona state championship.
"There's a little added pressure but it's not much. If we go out there and play some good baseball we will win," Kochanski said.
"If we keep hitting and playing defense like we do, then yeah," added Schindler.
"It would be exciting, we would be really excited."
