Chandler police exchange gunfire with a suspect

CHANDLER - Police have exchanged gunfire with a man believed to have triggered the earlier lockdown of five schools in the Chandler area.

Chandler police have identified the suspect as 25-year-old David Javier Gonzales of Mesa.

They say he fled an apartment complex in a stolen vehicle about 3:30 p.m. Monday but may have been wounded in the shooting.

Police say no officers were injured.

Witnesses reported seeing a man get out of a van in a trailer park with either a rifle or a shotgun in the area of the schools about 8:30 a.m.

Five schools in the area including Chandler High were put on lockdowns.

Police SWAT teams were called out, but there was no sign of the man and the lockdowns were lifted around noon.
