Charges dropped against Sahuarita wrestler accused of assault, kidnapping

SAHUARITA - Charges have been dismissed against a 17-year-old Sahuarita wrestler due to insufficient evidence to prove a case, according to the Pima County Attorney's Office.

The teen was one of seven Sahuarita High School wrestlers accused of assault and kidnapping in a January locker room incident. Court records show the county sent plea offers to the four 18-year-old defendants facing felony charges in the same incident.

According to witness statements a freshman basketball player was restrained with his arm and legs pinned. His pants and underwear were also removed.

One witness said the boys used their private parts to smack him in the face.

Another witness told police that when he was a freshman this type of thing also happened to him but much worse.

All seven wrestlers were suspended, but two minors, including the one who no longer faces charges, were allowed back at school during spring semester.

Two other juveniles on the wrestling team still face Juvenile Court trials. The four adults are due in Superior Court next month for case management hearings.
