TUCSON - New details are emerging about the inmate who failed to return to the Pima County Jail.
Robert Michael Nelson was last seen Wednesday. He was granted permission by a judge to leave the facility to get a medical procedure.
News 4 Tucson obtained court records that show his attorney filed paperwork asking Judge Brendan Griffin to grant temporary release for Nelson to get an endoscopy. The attorney told the judge he missed two since he was taken into custody June 10.
The attorney warned the judge Nelson had a real chance to bleed to death if he did not receive the procedure.
On July 30, the day before the surgery, a minute entry states, the prosecutor leaves the decision up to the judge however "requests the defendant be admonished of the consequences should he fail to return to the Pima County Jail."
The judge granted permission for a friend of Nelson's to pick him up at the jail at 7:00 a.m. and he's to return by 4:00 p.m.
According to medical personnel, Nelson arrived at 310 N. Wilmot road to see Dr. Sylvain Sidi. The procedure was done at 9:00 a.m. The friend says he lost track of Nelson after that.
Nelson was in jail on Aggravated DUI charges.
Another court document dated June 10, 2013 gives a description of Nelson's arrest. A Pima County Sheriff's deputy pulled him over after Nelson made an illegal "U" turn. The deputy says Nelson had a revoked license due to many DUI's. The deputy describes Nelson as stumbling, slurred speech, and blood shot eyes. The preliminary breath test showed nelson at nearly four times the legal limit.
Pima county's Fugitive Investigated Strike Team is out looking for Nelson.
He also has two court appearances coming up next week. If he doesn't show, a judge will issue a bench warrant for his arrest.
