TUCSON - Employees at Sir Veza's Taco Garage dedicated their shift to their coworker who was killed crossing the road.
Matt Bono, 28, died Saturday around 3 p.m. He was in a crosswalk on Speedway Boulevard west of Alvernon Way. The driver, Edward George, 74, was charged with Second Degree Murder. Police believe George was drinking before the collision.
Noah Meyer works at Sir Veza's near Tucson Mall and saw Bono the day before the accident.
"This is a huge blow for us," Meyer said. "It's not just another coworker. It's like our brother just died."
Samantha Duarte, a bartender, said he was her first friend when she started.
"We'd always ask him, ‘How's your day going?'" she said. "‘Living the dream. Living the dream.' That was always his little thing."
He worked at the restaurant when it first opened.
"He had this contagious laugh," Duarte said. "So bad that he'd be in the back, and he'd be laughing, and we could hear him at the bar."
The driver did not immediately stop after the accident. Somebody else had to flag him down. Then he returned to the scene.
"I hope that he's OK. However, I know that he's probably suffering as well," Duarte said, "But at the same time, he should have made a different decision than to drive."
The crew heard the news late Saturday night.
"We just feel robbed. There's no other way to say it. We feel robbed," Meyer said. "There's no excuse for that."
Sunday afternoon, a family member at George's house said he did not want to comment on the charges.
A manager at Sir Veza's said he has been talking to Bono's family. The crew is going to help raise money for expenses.
