Diamondbacks drop the ball with lead in N-L West

Maybe the Diamondbacks were watching updates on the royal baby between innings early on in the game on Monday against the Chicago Cubs. Through the first five innings the D-Backs did not look like a team determined to stay on top of MLB's National League West.

Early on it was the Cubs' bats that dominated the game, with Chicago's Dioner Navarro connecting deep to left center for a home run off Arizona pitcher Tyler Skaggs in the top of the 2nd inning. The homer put the Cubs up 1-0.

Then in the top of the 5th, the cubs Junior Lake would hit a home run deep to right center scoring two runs extending Chicago's lead, 3-0.

Finally in the bottom of the 6th inning the Diamondbacks would grind out some runs. First to strike was Martin Prado's who's sac-fly to right scored Didi Gregorious.

The next batter, Paul Goldschmidt, would follow up with an infield single passed second base allowing Adam Eaton to score the D-Backs second run of the night and making the score 3-2.

But the Cubs weren't done yet and in the top of the ninth, Junior Lake would strike again with two on driving a single to left and driving in Darwin Barney. That's all the Cubs would need, winning the game 4-2.

The loss knocked the Diamondbacks out of first after the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Toronto 14-5 on Monday. The Arizona Diamondbacks are now in second place in the NL West, a half game behind the Dodgers.
