DPS assists in swift-water rescue

TONTO CREEK - Arizona Department of Public Safety helped rescue an elderly couple trapped in rapid waters on Sunday.

The DPS Air Rescue Helicopter responded to the Tonto Creek area near Punkin Center on March 10, where a full-sized Ford F150 was driven into the swollen creek. It was floating down stream with two elderly occupants inside.

When crews arrived on scene they saw the couple inside the truck, with the male sitting in the driver's side window.

According to DPS, his condition was worsening as he was getting colder in the snow melt runoff.
DPS positioned its helicopter over the bed of the truck and a DPS Paramedic was sent down to the cargo bed.

The female victim was assisted into the helicopter first. The Paramedic helped the male victim after breaking the rear window of the truck.

Both victims were turned over to the care of the Tonto Basin Fire Department.

In addition to DPS, the Gila County Sheriff's Office, the Tonto Basin Fire Department, and the U.S. Forest Service assisted in the rescue.
