Family devastated over death of Patrick Balbastro

TUCSON - The family of 32-year-old Patrick Balbastro is trying to come to terms with their loved ones death. He and his girlfriend were driving on Sunland Vista on the first day of the New Year when they witnessed a woman getting beaten by a man. They called 911, and then went back to help 46-year-old Cindy Burnett.

When they stopped to help Burnett the suspect, described as a light skin African American or Hispanic, started fighting with Balbastro. Somehow, the suspect got in the vehicle and then ran over Burnett, Balbastro, and his girlfriend several times.

Balbastro's sister spoke with News 4 Tucson, but asked we not identify her. She says what her brother did, wasn't surprising. He always went out of his way to help others.

Fighting back tears, she says, "We're trying to hold up , but we're just very sad. Very sad"

His sister described Patrick as a hard working, loving brother who loved his family. Just hours before he died they were at the casino celebrating the New Year and having fun. "We talked about goals that night . His goal was to buy a home before his birthday. He was living life to the fullest. "

Just two blocks from home he stopped to help someone in need and his life came to an end. The family says the person who did this is a "Monster". "For someone to run somebody over multiple times get out and the hit the person in the face and then run them over again? Who does that?"

She says that monster not only killed her brother, but devastated her family and others. "They have families, she has kids that' s what breaks my heart. He was my brother, and I love him so much."
