Family still grieving from fatal shooting get help from community

TUCSON-Almost seven hundred dollars were raised for the family grieving over the loss of a loved one.

Twenty-five-year-old Tina Soto was shot and killed in June allegedly by her estranged live-in boyfriend in front of two of their three daughters.

Stephen Malone was arrested for the shooting.

Soto's mother now has the task of raising her three granddaughters.

To help with the financial burden, Evolution Fitness put on a fundraiser Saturday.

Evolution Fitness is the gym where Tina Soto used to work out with her aunt Rachel Tineo.

Not only did people who knew her come out for the fundraiser, but also strangers.

"She used to make you laugh and when you were sad or down there was nothing she wouldn't do to put a smile on your face," said Leticia Castaneda.

Castaneda said she was Soto's friend.

She is one of over two dozen who signed up for the competition in memory of Soto.

"A tribute to her and just to keep her memory alive and remind the community and remind everybody else that she left some babies behind that will need care every day," said Tineo.

For Tineo, this place holds a lot of memories of her neice.

"We both started together actually," said Tineo.

The competition is raising money for Soto's children, a cause Evolution Fitness's owner Danny Sawaya said he couldn't resist getting involved in.

"I had people I don't even know show up that had heard about it to donate, so it's really great," said Sawaya.

Soto's mother, Theresa Soto is taking care of the girls.

She stopped working three weeks ago to dedicate her attention to her granddaughters during this crisis.

"For right now just during this crucial period, she wants to focus on just them, and as a family we are all pitching in to help her out as much as we can," said Tineo. "At some point she's going to end up having to get a job just to continue taking care of them. It's going to happen."

But until then, Tineo said the family appreciates that the community has stepped up to help them move forward.

Sawaya said he hopes to have more fundraisers like this in the near future for the family.

If you weren't able to make it out to the fundraiser, you can still help the family by contacting Homicide Survivors.

Just let them know you want to donate to the family of Tina Soto.
