TUCSON- It is hard to believe we have just more than one week to go in our Fit 4 '14 challenge. It is even harder to contain the excitement of just how far we have all come in so little time. The ultimate goal in the competition is to see who can lose the highest percentage of their starting weight. However our trainers at Amped Fitness continue emphasizing other measurements of success. Things like inches lost, body fat caliper testing and simple indications like how our clothes fit and how we feel. I think it's been particularly tough for the girls. Shannon and I both tend to fixate on the scale and it's amazing how a "good" or "bad" weigh-in can take a toll on a workout, or even the entire rest of the day. The two of us are always encouraging one another to keep up the hard work and giving reassurance that everything will even out in the end. It's something our trainers address on a weekly basis and while the two of us are getting better, it's definitely going to take months, even years, to truly stop associating our overall health with one little number.
Speaking of numbers, the latest one show we're all slowing down a bit when it comes to pounds lost. However, in looking at photos from the past six weeks, it is obvious we are ALL making progress in our quest to get fit and healthier, and that is what we've been told to focus on.
Porkchop is still the biggest loser, he's now down a whopping 15 pounds, which is 6 percent of his starting weight. Shannon continues to show great progress, she's lost 8 pounds and 5 percent of her starting weight. John has really kicked it up in the gym and with his diet. His strength and cardio are improving with each workout. So far he's lost 10 pounds, which is 5 percent of his body weight. After a .2-pound gain last week, I was happy to see a loss this week. I'm now down 7 pounds, which is 4 percent of my starting weight, and have really noticed some changes in the way my clothes fit. Also, my cravings for sugar and junk food aren't nearly as strong as they used to be, and that's really helped keep my diet clean.
