Defending national champion Florida State will start the season as the number one team in America, according to the AP Top 25 poll released on Sunday. The Seminoles beat Auburn in the BCS Championship back in January. Alabama is ranked number two.
This marks the sixth time FSU begins the season with the top ranking. They last held the honor in 1999 when they became the first team to remain number one for the entire season.
Since its start in 1950, only 10 AP preseason number one programs have gone on to win the title that year. Florida State owns two of those marks in 1993 and 1999.
The Pac-12 is well represented in the polls with six programs cracking the Top 25 including Oregon at number three. The Ducks are another favorite to win the league and possibly a berth in the national championship game.
UCLA has been selected seventh in the preseason poll, followed by Stanford at 11th, USC at 15th, Arizona State at 19th and Washington falls into the 25th spot. Oregon State is among the teams receiving votes.
Arizona did not receive any votes in the AP poll, although the Wildcats did get one mention according to the USA Today poll. Arizona opens its season Friday, August 29th at home against UNLV.
