TUCSON - Gabby Giffords appeared in front of a large crowd at the Rialto Theatre Saturday.
She was with her husband, Mark Kelly, to support Ron Barber's congressional campaign.
Barber is competing with Jesse Kelly and Charlie Manolakis for Giffords' old seat. She resigned earlier this year.
Calexico lead singer, Joey Burns, headlined a concert for Barber's volunteers.
Giffords smiled and waved as the crowd gave her an ovation.
"Thank you very much," Giffords said.
The concert was free, but people had to sign up for a shift volunteering for the Barber campaign.
Some people were not aware they had to help the campaign when they arrived, so they left.
Volunteers for Jesse Kelly spent the day knocking on doors and making phone calls.
More than half of all voters may have already cast their ballots, according to Kelly. But that does not change the pace.
"You don't slow down at all," Kelly said. "You better be moving as fast as you've ever moved before."
It can be difficult encouraging voters in an election that is not in November.
"Lots of times people don't know what day it is," Kelly said, "so we can't say the words June 12th enough. We tell everybody June 12th, June 12th and tell your friends."
It is too late to put early ballots in the mail.
