Giffords' mom reads at book store

BENSON - Gabby Giffords' mother Gloria read sections of "Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope" to a crowded book store near Tucson Sunday.

Gloria Giffords has been going to Singing Wind Bookshop for years. She is a good friend of the owner.

"I'm the comic relief in this book," she told the crowd.

Local authors regularly read at the store, but Sunday's event was bigger than usual.

"It just seemed like a really symbolic thing," Gloria Giffords said, "Gabby was here a year ago."

Gabby honored the store at an event last year. Store employees said she even helped clean up trash after.

"This has been a horrific, horrific experience for everyone," Gloria Giffords said, "but she's something else. She's a winner."

She has no doubt about her daughter's recovery.

"Every day minor breakthroughs," Giffords said. "There doesn't seem to be any plateauing. There's no going back. Every day it's better."

Gloria Giffords said she does not plan on reading to the public in the future. She says it is Gabby Giffords' and Mark Kelly's book. She just likes the people at Singing Wind Bookshop.
