TUCSON - New details on a murder in Marana have been released by police. It happened on May 17, in the 8900 block of North Palm Brook Drive, after an apparent confrontation involving a married couple.
Marana Police responded to a 911 call last Thursday, just after 11:15 pm. Jerry Mayfield, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife Toni Mayfield was taken into custody and has been charged with 2nd degree murder.
The Interim Complaint Report from the night of the murder reveals grisly details of what appears to have been a brutal fight between Toni and Jerry Mayfield, with a deadly end.
According to the report, officers who arrived at the home of Jerry and Toni Mayfield last Thursday came upon a ghastly scene. In the four page document dated May 17, officers recall responding to a 911 call "in which a female subject stated she had killed her husband." The woman then identified herself as Toni Mayfield. According to the report, "Toni had three lacerations over her left eye."
There was also more evidence of a violent fight. The report stated Toni had "blood covering most of her body" and blood everywhere with a "large amount in the master bedroom". That is where they found the body of Jerry Mayfield "face down in a pool of blood." The details were even more gruesome with "a large defect on the left side of his skull which exposed the brain."
A weapon was also found at the scene on Jerry Mayfield's body as the report states, "in his right hand was a handgun." Officers also found a "hammer with blood like substance."
The report concludes with notes of what is described as an "utterance" by Toni Mayfield. According to the report, Mayfield said her husband was mad at her and she had run into the master bedroom. She also stated that he had come after her and because she was scared she "began to hit him and hit him." She went on to say "she knew she had killed him"
Toni Mayfield remains in custody at the Pima County Jail on a $250,000 cash only bond.
