TUCSON - The Border Patrol checkpoint on State Route 80 near Huachuca City will reopen tonight after a four-month re-design project to reduce wait time for motorists and improve working conditions for agents.
The new design now has two lanes, allowing for improved traffic flow and shorter wait times, according to a news release from Customs and Border Protection. In addition, a 65-foot canopy creates a safer environment for agents.
These improvements allow the checkpoint to be operated more efficiently, 24 hours a day, CBP states.
"Checkpoint operations are a vital part of the Border Patrol's ‘Defense in Depth' strategy to hinder criminal organizations attempting to transport contraband into the United States by restricting routes of egress from the border region," the CBP release states. "Through improved infrastructure, advanced technology and increases in personnel, Border Patrol agents are making significant progress toward establishing a secure and safe border environment while improving the quality of life for Arizona's communities."
