Hit-and-run victim's mother speaks out

CATALINA - The Pima County Sheriff's Department says the man who is believed to have hit and killed a 22-year-old Catalina man earlier this week was also behind the wheel in deadly accident in 2004.

Deputies say Andrew Perez, 24, is being held in the Pima County Jail on a class two felony for leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

Tom Peine, a spokesman for the sheriff's department confirmed that Perez was behind the wheel ten years ago when his younger brother jumped on the hood of a moving vehicle that Perez was driving. The boy died a few days after the accident. Perez was 15 at the time. It's unclear if any charges were ever filed.

Jacob Lee Wyckoff was hit along the North Twin Lakes Drive in the town of Catalina. Deputies say Perez was behind the wheel.

Wyckoff's mother Julie Rogiers said she last saw her son in January. She said she didn't know he was a heroin addict, "it's so hard being a parent and not knowing your son is addicted. Not knowing the pain and the anguish he went through."

Rogiers said she has been reading her son's bible and journal since she learned of his death, "he wrote to his self the road to recovery begins with you Jacob. You have nothing to lose. That you have not already lost and everything to gain."

She said she wants something positive to come from her loss, "I want justice for jacob. I want justice."

The Pima County Sheriff's Department says the investigation remains ongoing.
