MADERA CANYON - Super scenery on a vastly underrated hike. There's a whole lot to like along the Super Trail.
The rugged trek crosses a streambed several times, flanked by foliage and dramatic views of Mount Wrightson.
"It's really fantastic. I'm learning so much as far as these desert mountains, with the vegetation, we saw a couple of birds", said hiker Jolene Srebotnjak. You can help spot bird species with help from a guide found at the trailhead.
For the ultimate weekend warrior, the Super Trail affords an elevation gain of 4,000 feet. Not looking for a lung buster? No worries. "The middle of the canyon gets real nice and easy. It levels off a bit", said hiker Fred Guerra.
At the start of the hike sits a plaque, honoring the Boy Scouts who perished during a freak snowstorm 55 years ago today. A second memorial can be found 4 miles up the trail, near Josephine Saddle.
All told, the Super Trail nets 16 miles round trip. Regardless on how far you're going, plan on packing the trekking poles.
