Hittin' the Trails 4 You: The Soldier Trail

TUCSON - Nestled into the desert grasslands, the Soldier Trail offers a good challenge for hikers.

Round trip, Soldier Trail clocks in around 5 miles, netting roughly 1,500 feet in elevation gain out and back.

The trail itself varies. Parts are wide, as this once was an old road and abandoned prison camp. Other areas, the trail narrows. Deep ruts can also be found, so watch your footing.

Soldier Trail winds through rolling hills and picturesque canyons. If you start by the Gordon Hirabayashi Campground, your hike down will be greeted with views of Tucson below.

Great view and versatility: Soldier Trail connects to other popular hikes such as the 800 mile Arizona Trail, the Bug Spring Trail and Molino Basin.

Further up the Catalina Mountains, the Incinerator Ridge Trail is closed due to a major project. Forest Service officials say parts of the trail may be re-routed. We'll keep you posted on when it reopens.
