MARANA - Some of Marana's marvelous hikes are gaining big-time attention.
We've gone "Hittin' the Trails" in the town's Tortolita Mountains before. Now, state officials have given these hikes state status, adding to over 600 miles of trails with this status across Arizona.
Among some of the short-term changes you'll see is an easier way to navigate trails. "We're color-coding the trails. Our maps have specific colors on each trail and we've purchased arrows that match those. So you literally can follow the blue arrows for the blue trail or the purple trail. We're hoping it'll make it more simplistic", said town of Marana's Jen Ward.
As far as looking long term, state trails like the ones in the Tortolitas have access to heritage funding. These funds can be used in the future to maintain or expand trails. The Tortolita trails will be included in the next edition of the Arizona State Parks and Trails publication, the Arizona State Parks website and promoted at state park locations and events.
