TUCSON - The Humane Society of Southern Arizona has just received a gift of one million dollars in memory of Ruth Tankersley and her daughter Tiffany. Both women have since passed away.
Ruth M. "Bazy" Tankersley and Tiffany Tankersley were dedicated supporters of the Tucson Community. "Bazy" was best known as owner of Al-Marah Arabians. She was devoted to her horses, and was one of the best known Arabian horse breeders in the country.
Bazy and Tiffany were also recognized for their volunteerism. Bazy founded St. Gregory College Preparatory School, served as president of the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, contributed to the founding of Therapeutic Riding of Tucson, and supported the Tucson Audubon Society.
She received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Arizona in 2004 in recognition of her contributions.
The Humane Society says the generous gift is critical to the HSSA's effort to build a new facility to help pets and the people who love them.
The intake center on the new campus, where pets in need are welcomed into care, will be called "The Bazy and Tiffany Tankersly Welcome Center" in their honor.
