Editor's note: The following is a release from Customs and Border Protection:
TUCSON - Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents manning southern checkpoints stopped two human-smuggling attempts in the last 72 hours.
Sunday afternoon, Tucson Station agents working the SR 286 checkpoint discovered two Mexican nationals hidden inside a GMC pickup after a canine team alerted to the vehicle. One person was found lying behind the front seat; the other was locked inside a toolbox mounted to the bed of the truck.
Tuesday night, Nogales Station agents working on I-19 arrested two United States citizens when agents discovered two illegal immigrants in the trunk of a Ford Focus. (Photo available)
In both cases the smugglers were arrested and now face federal prosecution. Those determined to be in the country illegally were apprehended and face removal proceedings.
Border Patrol checkpoints act as a force-multiplier by adding an additional layer of defense to stop criminal organizations from smuggling humans and contraband into the United States.
