Inmate on work-release program found hanged

TUCSON - An inmate found dead hanging at the Pima Animal shelter Wednesday has prompted officials to close the facility.

Inmate Patrick Hoppes, 48, ADC #242119, died from an apparent suicide at an off-site work location, a release from the Department of Correction detailed.

Tucson Fire and Police Departments responded and life-saving measures were performed. The inmate was pronounced deceased at 3:05 p.m.

An investigation will be led by the Department's Criminal Investigation Unit in consultation with the county medical examiner's office.

Hoppes, sentenced out of Maricopa County, was serving nine years and three months for trafficking in stolen property. He came to ADC custody on May 11, 2009 and was housed at ASPC-Tucson.

Pima Animal Care had a scheduled press conference at 2 p.m. to address overcrowding issues.
