KIRKLAND, WA - Yannira Acuna starred on the mound and at the plate on Monday, but Sunnyside fell to Milano, Italy 6-5 in their second game of pool play at the Junior Softball World Series.
Sunnyside fell into a quick 5-1 deficit, but the Tucson team was able to rally once again. Acuna's RBI single in the top of the fifth inning sparked the rally. The hit to center-field scored Alexis Anderson to make it 5-2. Amaya Turner was also able to score on the play bringing Sunnyside to within two. Moments later, Arlett Arreola blasted a line drive to right field and Acuna eventually scored on the play.
Acuna would tie the game with another RBI in the top of the seventh, bringing the score to five-all. Irene Costa scored the winning run for Italy in the bottom half of the inning.
Acuna went 5 2/3 innings on the mound, complete with two strikeouts and no earned runs. She also led the team with three hits. She entered in relief for Angela Sallas who walked five and gave up four runs early in the game.
Arreola had two hits and two RBIs for Sunnyside, which struck out six times at the plate. Italy was credited with only 3 hits, but the European team collected eight walks in the contest.
Sunnyside falls to 1-1 in pool play at the Junior Softball World Series. They will face Eagle Pass, Texas (Southwest) on Tuesday at 11:45am. Eagle Pass is 0-2 in pool play.
