Kitchen Cops: Money and food bad combo for Mexican restaurant

TUCSON - Classes are back in session on the campus of the University of Arizona with students back in town pursuing a higher education but spreading knowledge about food safety is a year round job for pima county health inspectors.

Mr. Antojo, at 1012 E. 6th St., received nine critical violations. A cook was observed handling money and putting on gloves without first washing his hands. A cook was also seen eating and drinking while preparing salsa. Eating and drinking by employees may only be done in designated areas. Food stored in a make top cooler tested above the maximum 41-degrees with mayonnaise at 64-degrees, sliced cheese 56-degrees and carne seca at 64-degrees. Stored food items were also not properly date marked. With five or more critical violations Mr. Antojo was given a "Provisional" rating.

Burger King, at 2402 N. Alvernon Ave., received two critical and two non-critical violations. An excessive amount of fly activity was observed in the kitchen and dining room. Several half sheet pans were found with an excessive amount of grease stuck on them. A non-critical violation described a wall under a three compartment sink as "very dirty" with heavy brown liquid splattered over it. With all violations not corrected during the inspection, Burger King, was given a "needs improvement" rating.

Restaurants awarded "Excellent" ratings include, Mi Nidito Restaurant, at 1813 S. 4th Ave., Scordatos Pizzeria, at 4280 N. Campbell Ave., and Jonathan's Tucson Cork, at 6320 E. Tanque Verde.
