Tucson - Eating establishments in Pima County are to be commended this week. Of the nearly 180 facilities inspected, 70 percent of them scored "excellent" ratings. There was one Thai restaurant that really bugged the Pima County Health Department.
Karuna's Thai Plate received two critical violations. A large rodent infestation was observed in the kitchen and dry storage area. An excessive amount of droppings were sighted, along with a dead rodent on the floor. Grease and food debris were seen throughout the facility. With a critical violation not corrected during the inspection, Karuna's Thai Plate 1917 E. Grant Rd., was given a "Needs Improvement" rating.
Furr's Cafeteria received three critical and two non-critical violations. Food in refrigeration units tested above the required maximum 41-degrees with cheese cubes at 54 degrees, dressing at 54 degrees and tapioca pudding temped at 47 degrees. Dried food debris was found in drawers and on several kitchen items. With all violations corrected with the inspector on site, Furr's Cafeteria at 1095 W. St. Mary's Rd., was given a "good" rating.
In a statement released by Furrs Cafeteria management said,"Thank you for the opportunity to rebut the Health Inspection Report. I just want to reiterate the fact that we did receive a Good rating. As for the issues brought up in the report, let me assure you that ALL issues have been resolved. Some issues were due to employee oversight and some were due to re-setting thaw timers to adapt to the excessive heat of Tucson's summers. Again, let me assure you that all has been corrected! We have consistently maintained a Good or Excellent rating with Pima County Health Department and strive to achieve the latter at all times. With one of the older establishments in town, (30 years at this location), we do understand the importance of maintaining Food Safety at all times, which I believe is one of the main reasons for our longevity. Thanks again! Troy Peterson GM"
Last week we told you about King's Restaurant, at 10 W. Grant, receiving a "Provisional" rating. the Pima County Health Department has confirmed that King's passed re-inspection.
Restaurants awarded "Excellent" ratings include, Bumsteds, at 500 N. 4th Ave., Libby's Egg Connection, at 3114 E. Ft. Lowell and Bobo's Restaurant, at 2938 E. Grant Rd.
