TUCSON - For the fourth year KVOA is launching our Kristi's Kids News 4 Tucson Lifesaver program.
Drowning is a top cause of accidental death for young children. So far in 2013, one child has died in a water related incident in Pinal County.
This year we are expanding our efforts to help keep all the little swimmers safe.
We're still giving away pool fences, C.P.R. and swim lessons. But the number of kids, and families, that we're helping has exploded.
KVOA is teaming up with the Y.M.C.A. with an amazing deal that'll save lives. Together we are offering hundreds of free swim lessons.
Swim lessons have always been a major part of the YMCA's mission. This is where countless kids learn life saving skills.
"Actually, we just moved to a new house that has a swimming pool in the backyard," says Gretchen Davis. Her son Eric is taking classes. "So I definitely wanted him to get familiar with the water and to know the rules, routine of being around the water."
"We go down to the ocean a lot," Kelly Wik tells us. Kelly's boy Brenan is in the pool for lessons. "My family has a pool and it would just make me feel a lot more comfortable, having him know what to do if he fell in."
This summer, for three months, Kristi's Kids will be splashing it up at the YMCA, in May, June and July.
"We're gonna try putting 100 kids in the pool, at 20 minute increments, 20 kids at a time," explains Suu Holtslander, Y.M.C.A., V.P. Branch Operations. "And then, after that introduction to swimming, we're gonna give them some vouchers that allows them to take additional swim lessons in our ALL KIDS SWIM program."
It's a priceless gift for 300 of Kristi's Kids ages 3 and up
"I actually feel like, until he fully knows how to swim on his own, he's at a greater risk,"
says Kelly. "Cuz he's feeling confident. He feels like he can go and jump in. And he can swim, when he can't."
So remember swim lessons cannot in any way replace adult supervision.
The Y.M.C.A. needs 20 to 30 volunteers for the Swim Fest events. If you are interested in helping contact the Y.M.C.A. firstname.lastname@example.org 623-5511 ext. 251
