Legislators OK bill to bar fees for student group

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona legislators have approved a bill to bar a student group from receiving fees collected by the three state universities.

The Senate approved the bill on Tuesday. It previously was approved by the House and next goes to Gov. Jan Brewer.

The bill was a reaction to the Arizona Students' Association's spending of $122,000 to support an unsuccessful 2012 ballot measure for a sales tax increase.

The bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills, said it's wrong for student fees to be used for politics. Democratic opponents of the bill argued that it would deprive students of representation on issues such as tuition increases.

Kavanagh contends it's wrong for student fees to be used for politics. Democrats argued that's always been the groups' mission.
