WASHINGTON - A lighting ceremony was held Sunday evening in Washington in observance of Hanukkah, the eight-day jewish holiday.
The ceremony was held on the first day and second night of Hanukkah.
The candle lighting took place at the National Menorah on the Ellipse near the White House.
Jews around the world celebrated the start of the eight-day Festival of Lights Saturday evening.
The first National Menorah Lighting occurred in 1979, with President Jimmy Carter in attendance.
