Lightning likely behind Prison Fire near Mount Lemmon

TUCSON - The Prison Fire is burning near the Gordon Hirabayashi Recreation Campground on Mount Lemmon.

It was probably caused by lightning, according to Coronado National Forest spokesperson Heidi Schewel.

It is estimated at about 100 acres, but that is only a rough guess because it just started after 6 p.m. Sunday night.

It did not cause any travel restrictions on the Catalina Highway or prompt evacuations.

It is burning mostly grass and brush in an area that also burned in 2003.

Firefighters got the resources they needed Sunday night, but they will have to wait until morning to see what happens when the sun comes up.

The Ironwood Hot Shots from the Northwest Fire District were one of 3 crews of 20 headed to fight the fire Sunday night.
