TUCSON - Local schools are reacting to the President's announcement.
Leaders from districts as diverse as Vail and Flowing Wells support of the President's plan, specifically the addition of School Resource Officers.
At Vail Schools budget cuts wiped out School Resource Officers a couple years ago.
Superintendent Calvin Baker says they are missed for two reasons: their presence deters crime and their interaction with kids promotes safety.
"Because there's a relationship, there's trust," says Baker.
At Flowing Wells, through their own resources have kept a police presence for 15 years.
Superintendent Dr. Nic Clement wants to expand the number of schools that have SROs and their hours of coverage.
Dr. Nic Clement says, "right now at the high school, our own off-duty officer, essentially serving as an SRO works from 11am to 3pm. We'd like to expand that to cover basically all day."
Dr. Clement's wish-list also includes the installation of panic bars to doors in the event of a school lockdown.
And equipping elementary schools with cameras, and a buzzer entry system.
When it comes to getting a good education, he says a sense of security has to come first.
"The brain is real tricky about that. We've got to feel safe before we engage in learning," says Dr. Clement.
Baker adds, "that's all built on the foundation of school being a safe place."
President Obama wants to put a thousand more resource officers and counselors in schools nationwide. And provide 150-million dollars to school districts and law enforcement agencies.
